No giant snow storm here maybe 8-10″ locally…. meh!

    • Knight4GFC says:

      You mean you survived? :)

      • barnslayer says:

It took me and Mrs. Barnslayer ~ 2 hours to dig out. The snowblower was backfiring a bunch but didn’t quit.

        • Knight4GFC says:

Haha!.. Oh!.. I mean… I’m sorry to hear that. I am happy the snowblower held out fer yas! :)

        • Glad to hear you and Mrs. Barn survived the big snow. We were worried, but not quite as much as when Sandy took you offline for so long. My snowblower is having carb problems, so I’m just glad you’re getting it and not me. ;)

          • barnslayer says:

Thanks for your concern Grunt. Sandy did suck but much worse for others than us. We seemed to get the least amount of snow on Long Island. Other local areas got twice what we had. More eastern areas claimed over 30″. Yeah, it’s either a filthy carburetor, old gasoline or more likely… both. If it were a gun it would be spotless inside and out.

    • I’m wondering what a snowblower is because I guess that is some fancy gadget sold above the mason dixon line. :-)

In the south, as soon as we hear that a half inch of snow is being forecast, there is a run on the grocery stores for bread, milk and eggs. Then, we huddle at home waiting to see the first snowflake so that we can relax because that means that the schools will be closed. Then, we relax and enjoy being trapped inside because we can’t drive anywhere as the children go out and build 6 inch tall snowmen and they sled on hills that are almost totally covered in snow.

That is an elegant twist to grade-school teacher Sister Rose’s rhetorical admonition to students whining about homework or having to go to Mass every day during Lent: “And what is your suffering compared to that of your Lord Jesus Christ hanging on the Cross for your sins?”

I’m sure Barn might find this Saint’s story of dying for her faith interesting as we in the Catholic Church regard her as a patroness of dentistry. :) Today is her feast day. The most important fact about her story, for all Christians, is that she chose a physical death rather than denounce her faith. In doing so, she gains everlasting life.

    St. Apollonia

“St. Apollonia, who died in the year 249, was martyred for not renouncing her faith during the reign of Emperor Philip. The account of the life of St. Apollonia was written by St. Dionysius to Fabian, Bishop of Antioch. Apollonia had all her teeth knocked out after being hit in the face by a Christian persecutor under the reign of Emperor Philip. After she was threatened with fire unless she renounced her faith, Apollonia jumped into the flames voluntarily. She is considered the patron of dental diseases and is often invoked by those with toothaches. Ancient art depicts her with a golden tooth at the end of her necklace. Also in art, she is seen with pincers holding a tooth.” http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=104

    John Q. Adams

    “United States presidential election, 1824

The United States presidential election of 1824 was the 10th quadrennial presidential election. It was held from Tuesday, October 26 to Thursday, December 2, 1824. John Quincy Adams was elected President on February 9, 1825, after the election was decided by the House of Representatives in what was termed the Corrupt Bargain. The previous years had seen a one-party government in the United States, as the Federalist Party had dissolved, leaving only the Democratic-Republican Party as a national political entity. In this election, the Democratic-Republican Party splintered as four separate candidates sought the presidency. This process did not yet lead to formal party organization, but later, the faction led by Andrew Jackson would evolve into the Democratic Party, while the factions led by John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay would become the National Republican Party and then the Whig Party.

The presidential election of 1824 is notable for being the only election since the passage of the Twelfth Amendment to have been decided by the House of Representatives in accordance with its provision to turn over the choice of the president to the House when no candidate secures a majority of the electoral vote. It was also the only presidential election in which the candidate who received the most electoral votes did not become president (since Andrew Jackson’s plurality of electoral votes was insufficient to prevent the election from being thrown into the House of Representatives). The election of 1824 is often claimed to be the first in which the successful presidential candidate did not win the popular vote; however, the popular vote was not measured nationwide at the time. Several states did not permit a popular vote, but rather allowed the state legislature to choose their electors.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_1824

    • Sad, but true.

Data Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment-Population Ratio

Compare the Republican Majority average (63.3% employment from Jan 1995 – Dec 2006) with the Democrat Majority average (60.0% employment from Jan 2007 – January 2013).

Then compare the George W. Bush Presidency average (62.7% employment from Jan 2001 – Dec 2008) to the Barack H. Obama pResidency average (58.7% employment from Jan 2009 – January 2013). And January 2013 was another below-average month, even by Obama’s low standards. The best months of employment under Obama were at the very beginning of his 1st term… i.e., the economy that he “inherited”. The worst month under Bush was better than the best month under Obama. The last time that Obama had a month above his average of 58.7% was August 2009. We have gone nearly 3 and a half years without any recovery at all. Compare that to the recovery we experienced after the passage of the second part of the Bush Tax Cuts in 2003… employment rose from a low of 62.0% in September 2003 to 63.4% in December 2006… the last month of Republican majorities in the House and Senate. That Republican majority finished a tenth of a point higher than the Republican majority average of the prior 12 years (63.3% employment from Jan 1995 – Dec 2006).

Then the Democrats (including Barack H. Obama as a Senator in the Democratic Senate majority) took over, increased the minimum wage three times, and the recovery ended, followed by the freefall in 2008 and 2009 that was due largely to the Democratic corruption at Fannie and Freddie, “Porkulus”, “Cash for Clunkers”, etc.
