That’s a pretty dang amazing story. I think she’s got Ian Fleming’s wartime exploits beat by a 100 miles. I like the fact that she remained faithful to her husband and worked with him during the underground resistance period in the south of France and Pyrenees.

Also, the CME from the X1 flare yesterday should hit sometime tomorrow. I don’t expect it’ll be of much significance, unless you’re an astronaut. Or, maybe a pilot, if they need to re-route polar flights.
There shouldn’t be much in the way of surface effects, save for those who have severe electromagnetic sensitivity, in which case FYI: Headaches, heart attacks, seizures, strokes, and more have been associated by some with significant space weather events. Flaring is high, strong space weather conditions incoming, polar radiation storm (energetic particles), coronal hole magnetic force & alfven waves will begin to affect earth today as well. (headaches are the most common, that and small moments of vertigo. The other things increase, but I think you’d have to be lined up for a stroke, heart attack, etc., anyway. . . I’m sensitive enough to get headaches and sometimes vertigo, but the rest is less likely for the average, healthy person.)
Thanks, Zoph. It’s good to know about these. Our idiot SUV loses it’s mind during solar storms, and the computer craps out, I really wouldn’t want to be flying tomorrow when that flare hits.

This is the first Earth-facing X-flare in a while, at least to send our a CME. Coupled with the Coronal Hole also facing our way, that does make for a somewhat interesting time, but as far as X-flares go, it’s minor. Just barely crossing into X-range.

Thanks! Shielding is good– and so much bette rthan it used to be. Back before they realised that humans had electromagnetic fields of their own, my mom could walk into a computer room (back when computers took rooms), and screw it up simply standing inside, not actually touching anything.
But a Massive Earth-facing X-flare with accompanying CME, such as happened in the late 1800’s, could do major damage to us. shielding what you can might mitigate some probs. . .
And perhaps some personal protection as well as a stealthy approach to prey! 😀

Related: We had another minor miracle at the little Marian shrine out in the garden over Christmas. On Christmas Eve, I set out about 7 or 8 white flower blossoms next to Our Lady’s little house. Two days later, I went out to set out some new blossoms and all but one of the original ones were flat and brown and frozen from the temps in the teens, as they always are. The fresh blossoms only last a few hours at most. But there was a single blossom that was fresh and white and perfect after 2 days. Not really possible. Made me think the attention was appreciated.
Beautiful. Sometimes it’s the tiny miracles that spurs you onward, giving you life to keep marching on. But if one is self consumed in the hardships of this life, wishing for one big miracle to take you out of your “misery”, you may end up missing the small miracles that happen right in front of you.

Yeah, I agree. I can’t believe that even though Hawaii is liberal to the max, we haven’t made any crazy laws banning that… yet.
I’ll add, though, that it helps when you live in the country or the backwoods, out of the cities. For example, here in my area, people would make handmade “booms” (may I stress, BIG BANGS) and set them off for New Year’s… totally illegal now… I believe (I miss the old days). You would’nt get away with that in the cities, towns, or suburban areas. You would be locked up forever.
