French Woman on Family Vacation Denied Entry to NY by U.S. Gov’t Because Name, Alic Aida, Sounds Like Al Qaeda

Ledauphine.com reports the following “American dream turned nightmare” story.  Hey, their cliche, not ours.  Somebody should have told her to keep her name and just come in through Mexico or Cuba.  Sheesh.  Nice patriotic nails, though…

“Madam, you are blacklisted , you cannot leave. ” These were the words that put the brakes on Alic Aida’s spring vacation at the Geneva airport as she was preparing to board a plane for New York with her husband and two children.  She confirmed to Ledauphine.com that she received a call from the U.S. Immigration Service with this message.  They told her she was prohibited from entering the territory of the United States.  “I first thought it was a joke, until I realized that our trip was really over,” says this young French woman settled in La Motte-Servolex (Savoy).  “Being blacklisted as a terrorist, you become a little paranoid” says Aida, wondering if her maiden name inscribed on her passport is the cause.”  Alic Aida, Al Qaeda.  When friends tease us about this it’s funny, but not here.  Especially since my real name is pronounced “Alitch;” it is of Yugoslav origin.  And here I am stuck as a person of risk.”

Wow… this reminds me of that list of words, one might use online, that automatically gets you on “the list” of potential terrorists to watch.

  2. ZurichMike says:

You mean words like anthrax, nuclear device, and “Obama is a closet Muslim”?
